It’s been almost 4 years since I’ve updated this blog. Kind of shameful really!
I guess over the past 4 years I have been sucked in to the Social Media black hole of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. So why am I even bothering to write this? Who will read it? How many likes will it get?!?
Therein lies the crux, the rub. Over the past 6 or 7 years we seem to have made that the only goal of sharing one’s thoughts.
Originally I set up this blog to chart my adventures in Japan some 20 years ago, I had no idea if anyone would bother reading it, or quite how I could even know if anyone would read it anyway. Blogs are personal endeavours, a place to empty the mind. Along the way it probably does some help, to know that you can talk to the void – on occasion the void talks back.
We are all now accustomed to the void talking back a bit too much, thanks to the immediacy of posting on Facebook or Twitter. It’s gratifying, it pushes the right buttons in ones mind. But it’s also the death of a thousand cuts. Blogs can be the art of long form, on your own terms, on your own domain.
Sure maybe no one will read my ramblings, but at least expunging on a blog was good for the mental health. At least it might have been, let’s find out.
Happy new year, let’s 2018!
